Church of St. Giorgio - Niardo
Location

The church overlooks Niardo from a rise. Founded in the 15th century, it seems to have substituted a previous church dedicated to the Madonna, with a cemetery annexed, then becoming a parish in the 12th century, separating from the direction of the Cividate parish. In the 15th century, after a flood, the topography of the area is modified: the reconstruction of the community where Niardo rises today and the moving of the parish to the church of St. Maurizio, erected where the present-day church is, changes St. Giorgio into a sanctuary. The building presents itself with a sober architectural line: preceded by an arcade, the inside with only one nave is divided into three parts defined by pilasters and in the ending part two niches open with altars dedicated to Saint Giorgio (on the left) and Saint Rocco (on the right); an ogive arch separates it from the presbytery, covered by a cross-vault, where the most significant artistic elements are concentrated: they comprise the frescoes on the side walls, which came up during the restoration works of 1935/1936 and the other paintings that reappeared on the back wall when, in 1957, the 18th century altarpiece was removed, containing a painting representing Saint Giorgio.
