Mortirolo Area - Monno
Location

The Mortirolo Pass was for centuries one of the main passes between Valle Camonica and Valtellina, and, starting from the 16th century, one of the points of contact between the Venetian Republic and the Grigioni State, belonging to protestant Switzerland. The legend says that in this place Charlemagne
encountered the Longobard troops of the d’Aumont Duke, in a great battle: a rather widespread etymology would have the name Mortirolo go back to the fallen of this clash. On the other hand, a clash is documented here between the French and the Austrian troops in 1799, during a harsh snow storm, and the passage of troops and the allocation of garrisons between 1848 and 1866.
